Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases: low value interventions.

چکیده
n March 2015, the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID) was one of 41 medical societies of the IRoyal Australasian College of Physicians to participate in the EVOLVE initiative, aimed at identifying five practices or interventions that were of low value or of limited usefulness. ASID members, including paediatricians, were surveyed and asked to short-list (and rank) suggested low value interventions (LVIs). From this survey emerged an overall short list that was circulated to respondents for further comment, and the final five LVIs were submitted to the ASID Council for endorsement.

Mortality among HIV-exposed infants: the first and final frontier.
Excessive childhood mortality in sub-Saharan Africa is a tragic and familiar story. In the 1970s, 120% of children in Africa died before reaching 5 years of age, a rate higher than that in any other region in the world. When the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic hit in the 1980s and 1990s, infant mortality rates increased further in some of the worst-affected areas as mother-to-child ...

متن کاملPreexposure prophylaxis for adolescents and young adults at risk for HIV infection: is an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure?
An alarming proportion of incident human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections worldwide occur in youth. In the United States, 69% of all new infections among youth occurred in young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Recent studies show the promise of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for preventing HIV infection, but research efforts suffer from disproportionately low representation of the yout...

We collected specimens from women who tested positive for Neisseria gonorrhoeae using the Gen-Probe APTIMA Combo 2 (AC2), and we performed confirmatory tests using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) that targets alternate gonococcal nucleic acid sequences. Among 59,664 specimens, 280 (0.47%) had positive results using AC2; 265 of these specimens were tested using the confirmatory NAAT, of...
